Sharks have been a source of inspiration, fascination and fear in mankind for centuries. There are probably as many ancient legends and myths surrounding sharks as there are books and movies in today’s popular culture. Some of these myths still persist today. Cultures portray sharks as vicious man-eaters, some revered sharks as gods and spirits to be worshipped and respected, and some myths attest to the health benefits of sharks.

Here is a list of the top four myths surrounding the health and medical benefits of sharks and the facts behind the myths that pharmacy technicians can share with their friends, family, co-workers and fellow shark enthusiasts.

Shark cartilage helps cure cancer: This is one of the most recent myths about the health benefits of sharks, and it started with the 1992 publication of the book Sharks Don’t Get Cancer by I. William Lane. According to the book, sharks have powerful immune systems that protect them from cancer, viruses and many other kinds of human diseases. Humans can take a piece of that immune system by taking shark cartilage. The cartilage is often extracted from the heads and fins of sharks and sold as a dietary supplement under the names Carticin, Cartilade™, BeneFin™, Neovastat (AE-941). Researchers are still looking into the possible health benefits, if any, of shark cartilage, but little to no evidence exists that shark cartilage has any effect on cancer. Also, modern studies have proven that sharks actually do get cancer like everyone else.

Shark fin soup increases virility and is full of nutrition: Shark fin soup is a dish served in Asian countries, but no scientific studies have proven that it has any significant health benefits. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency has issued advisories for consumers to avoid eating shark due to the fact that it can contain high levels of mercury.

Shark liver oil will protect against any disease: Shark liver oil has been used for centuries as a folk remedy to treat wounds. In fact, some formulations of Preparation H contain shark liver oil. Some proponents claim that shark liver oil is rich in vitamins, omega fatty acids and alkylglycerols (all of which are believed to help boost the immune system) and will protect against any disease from the common cold to Alzheimer’s disease to cancer. While shark liver oil does have some common uses, researchers have yet to find a definitive link between shark liver oil and increased immune function.

Capsaicin works as a shark repellant: As many pharmacy technicians know, capsaicin is often used in topical creams to relieve arthritis and other pains, but it is also the chemical that gives chili peppers their spice. For this reason, capsaicin was featured on a special Shark Week edition of Mythbusters. The myth was that Kuna people of Panama used the capsaicin that gives chili peppers their spice as a shark repellant. The Mythbusters put the myth to the test by filling balloons with a special mix of water and habanero pepper juice and attaching the balloons to a bait box inside a shark swimming pool. Unfortunately, the capsaicin did nothing to make the bait any less desirable to the sharks.

In the past, pharmacy technicians have been recognized on National Pharmacy Technician Day (the 3rd Tuesday of each October), however this originated as a part of National Pharmacy Week. Since the APhA launched October as American Pharmacy Month a few years ago, we are considering making the shift to recognize technicians for an entire week. This is the approach that ASHP takes with Health-System Pharmacy Week.

Each day of the week could be designated to recognize pharmacy technicians working in various practice settings, ie Retail Pharmacy Technician Day, Health-System Pharmacy Technician Day, Pharmacy Technician Educators Day, etc.

We want your thoughts, feedback & suggestions.

I am fascinated by sharks….all types of sharks…black tips, white tips, nurse sharks, tiger sharks, hammerheads and especially the Great Whites. Since obtaining my certification in diving in 2004, I have had the joy of free diving with sharks in Hawaii, Australia, Mexico and Belize.

As many of you know, I also serve as the Publisher of Today’s Technician magazine (the first magazine ever developed specifically for pharmacy technicians…). When we launched the publication in 2000, I had no clue about publishing a magazine and after 10 years I still learn from each issue that goes to press.

One of the ways that I have evolved as a publisher is to read and review a ton of magazines….seriously, just ask my assistant, Laura. I scour magazines from all sectors, interests and niches, but it is always a bonus to review magazines that are dedicated to topics that I am passionate about – like sharks.

Shark Diver magazine is one of the roughly 60 magazines I subscribe to and/or review. It is dedicated to a niche group of individuals (including myself) not unlike Today’s Technician. Eli Martinez, the editor at Shark Diver magazine has recently embarked on a project of blogging about “the making of the magazine.” I certainly connect with a lot of Eli’s comments, such as:

The mag is finally out of my hands and into the printers dirty mittens. Ya! This issue turned into one of the longest issues I have ever worked on. I took my time with each layout, making sure it looked good, but damn. I am just glad it is out of my hands now, and I now all I have to worry about is my back and forth emails and calls between me and the printer. Of course now I sit and worry about color and editing mistakes, and so on. Its a never ending thing. But at least I am done with this mag and I can somewhat rest for a day or two before it starts all over again.
(April 22, 2009 – http://sharkdivermag.com/makingthemag.html)

If you are interested in getting a sneak peek into the life and mind of a niche magazine editor/publisher….or you want to learn a little more about why on earth people like myself enjoy diving with sharks, check out the blog at http://sharkdivermag.com/makingthemag.html

SB 203, known as Emily’s Law, has received Governor Ted Strickland’s signature today, making the law official in the state of Ohio. Named after Emily Jerry, Emily’s Law will provide strict requirements and regulations for pharmacy technicians. The law, which was originally sponsored by Senator Tim Grendell, was drafted with assistance of the National Pharmacy Technician Association.

Emily’s Story
Emily Jerry died at the age of two as the result of a medication error caused by a pharmacy technician. On the day that Emily was to have her final chemo treatment and received an excellent prognosis from physicians, she was given a fatal dosage of chemotherapy. The pharmacy technician who prepared Emily’s chemotherapy had opted to compound her own normal saline base solution, as opposed to using a commercially manufactured (prepacked) IV solution bag.
Standard IV bags contain a base solution of 0.9% NaCL (sodium chloride); the base solution prepared for Emily contained approximately 20x the standard concentration of sodium chloride. Prior to entering a coma, Emily grabbed her head, screamed and cried as she experienced a fatal overdose of sodium chloride.

Although pharmacy technicians practice under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the public assumes that these individuals are still required to be properly trained and demonstrate competency to work within a pharmacy setting. While controversy still remains over the specific circumstances of what occurred that day in the pharmacy, the fact remains that a major medication error occurred, went uncaught and ultimately cost Emily Jerry her life. In the aftermath, local and national media attention exposed the gross inadequacies of pharmacy technician standards and regulations in Ohio (as well as across most of the United States).

Emily’s Law
Kelly Jerry, the mother of Emily, became resolved to ensure that another family would never have to encounter such a tragic and preventable loss. In 2006, the National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA), based out of Houston, reached out to Kelly offering support, guidance and lobbying assistance. In 2008, with the support of Senator Tim Grendell (R), SB 203, now known as Emily’s Law, was introduced in the Ohio State Senate.

NPTA’s Chairman and CEO, Mike Johnston, CPhT, traveled on numerous occasions to Ohio to support Kelly Jerry and work with Senator Grendell in overcoming powerful, opposing lobbyist efforts and a few petty politicians. In a unique and unlikely series of circumstances, Grendell and Johnston were not only able to get all opposing parties on board with SB 203, but they were able to revise the bill, making it even stronger than the original draft.

“I am thankful for the assistance of the National Pharmacy Technician Association with the passage of Emily’s Law in Ohio,” explained Kelly Jerry, “due to their expertise, persistence and hard work, Ohio now has the most thorough and stringent laws regarding pharmacy technicians in the United States.”

The primary provisions of Emily’s Law will require that pharmacy technicians be at least 18 years of age, register with the State Board of Pharmacy and pass a Board-approved competency exam; the legislation also includes specific provisions related to technician training/education, criminal records and approved disciplinary actions.

“Governor Strickland, Senator Grendell and the Ohio State Legislature have taken a significant step in protecting the citizens of Ohio from preventable medication errors today,” explained Johnston, “and the National Pharmacy Technician Association is proud to have played a role in it.”
While pharmacy technicians currently practicing in Ohio will have 210 days from the law’s effective date to become in compliance with the new regulations, they will not be exempt from the statutes – a common practice known as “grandfathering.”

Ultimately, Emily’s Law has become a reality due to the strength, courage and perseverance of Kelly Jerry and her family, as well as Senator Tim Grendell, the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy and the National Pharmacy Technician Association.

Governor Ted Strickland held an official Signing Ceremony of Emily’s Law today in Columbus. Invited guests included Kelly Jerry and family, Senator Grendell and Mike Johnston.
